Olympus Evolt E420 Review @ goodgearguide

Colour performance was equally solid. We tested mainly using the Vivid preset, which produced a fairly well-balanced look that tended towards being strongly saturated. Reds were particularly rich and vivid, but overall everything was extremely accurate. Imatest confirmed this, giving the E-420 an impressive score in its colour checker test.

goodgearguide Review the Olympus Evolt E420 and gave out”What’s Hot:
Small build, great colour balance, excellent noise performance, speedy burst mode—
What’s Not:
Pictures a little soft at default settings, no image stabilisation, menu can be a little clunky, small design may not suit everyone—
The Final Word:
If you’re after a petite SLR then the Olympus E-420 is a solid performer. It keeps pace with the competition in most areas, while maintaining dimensions that are significantly smaller.”

Canon Rebel XSI or Olympus E-420?
I want to start professional photography and therefore I want to buy my first DSLR. I am thinking between Canon Rebel XSI and Olympus E-420. I want to know your comments on this. Since XSI is more expensive than E-420 I want to know if it really worth it to go with XSI.

Most everyone will tell you to get the Canon, but you could do what ever you could with the Olympus. You want to be a professional photographer or you just want to take photo like the professionals? Either way, you need to learn more about photography by taking classes and learn the basic and mechanics of photography. The problem with digital cameras is that if you haven’t handled cameras before, the chances are that you can bumped them or even dropped them; thus, without an accidental insurance, your camera will cost a lot to get it fixed. If you are a professional already you would buy the XSi because of the flexibility you can with it right now and a more advance features. If you are just starting and learning, I would suggest the E-420 because with technologies are improving and changing so fast, by the time you might be proficient with it (maybe about 2 years), there will be a lot better cameras that are around that range of prices. Most professional photographers use the optic viewfinder than the LCD monitors. But if you must have it, then both of them are the choices. Spend what you can save on the Olympus on accidental warranty, or buy one for the Canon if it is your choice - or take a chance and be very careful. Professional photographers treat their cameras like it was their babies - with extra care. From where I am now with my experiences, I would choose the XSi from those two. If I’m just starting, it would be the Olympus.

The E-420 has a built in flash with the following basic specifications -

Retractable flash (Auto pop-up type), GN=12 (ISO 100.m)

For all the cameras specifications go to this link

Olympus also makes several flash units that are compatible with the camera and will provide automatic flash exposure control. This link shows the Oly flashes designed for use with this model -

In addition you can buy a variety of “third party” flash units that will work with the camera, with varying degrees of automatic exposure from no automatic exposure to full TTL (Through The Lens) control. Just make sure that anything you buy does not exceed the recommended trigger voltage for the camera unless you get a “Safe-Sync” type adapter to step down the voltage.
